How can I get my Images in
Digital format for
Photo Uploading?

Digital cameras enable you to take a picture and
immediately have it in digital format.   Your camera
instructions will explain how to upload these pictures
to your computer.
How Digital Cameras Work

Bring your undeveloped film to your local photo
processor and ask them to make a copy of your
pictures onto a cd.  You can then insert this photo
cd into your computer's cd-rom reader for uploading.
Take your photos with a regular film camera and
have the pictures developed.  Use your scanner to
convert your photos into digital images for uploading.
Some copy centers also provide this service.

Photo Taking Tips

Know Your Camera- Read through the manual to gain a better understanding of your camera's features including how to use different camera modes and how to best use the flash.

Lighting - This is considered the most important aspect of photography.  When taking photos outdoors, avoid taking pictures of your item in bright, direct sunlight.   Horizontal light, rising/setting sun, works best.  Take your photos a few hours after sunrise or a few hours before sunset for best results.  Overcast days are ideal for outdoor shots as well.  When taking photos indoors, find an area with lots of natural light.  If possible, taking the photos near a window would be the best option.

Control the Flash -You should never rely on the automatic flash setting.  Depending on the situation, you may need to turn it on or off.  It is always good to take some photos of your item with the flash on and some with the flash off.   Then after viewing the results, you can determine which created the best photo.

Macro Mode -This camera feature is ideal for taking close up shots and is generally represented by a flower symbol on most cameras.  If your item contains a lot of detail, you may want to take some photos in marco mode to capture those details for potential buyers to view.   Or if you are taking photos of smaller items, such as jewelry, this mode should be used to achieve a nice crisp photo.

Setting up the Photo - Solid, neutral backgrounds are recommended.  You want buyers to focus on your item not on the background.  If your background is too busy, it may be difficult for buyers to see the item clearly.  The key is to remove everything from around the item you are selling.

Taking the Photo - Get close.  Buyers like to see detail, make sure your item takes up the whole frame so there is little border all the way around.  Consider taking a close-up section of the item as well to provide additional details.  Take photos from different angles.  Use as many photos as is necessary to capture the appearance of your item.  Be sure to hold the camera level and steady while pressing the shutter button to avoid blurry or crooked photos. You can lock the focus and exposure by half-pressing the shutter button.  Set up your shot, press the button down halfway and then depress it fully.  The picture will be taken immediately, so you don't have to hold it steady for that long.  This technique takes some practice, but once mastered can be extremely helpful when photographing.

Editing the Photo - Use your Digital Camera or Computer photo editing programs.  You can crop the image to remove empty space or distracting objects.  You may want to leave some space around the object as a visual frame.  Next, you can adjust the brightness and contrast as necessary.

Do I really need to spend the time taking quality photos?

Yes!  Good photos of items attract more buyer interest and increase sales.  A study conducted by ebay, the world's largest online auction site, determined that auctions with higher quality photos sold faster and for higher final sale prices than auctions with lower quality photos.  Think about it, why do print catalogs spend thousands of dollars to hire photographers to take photos of their products?  The do this because good pictures of their merchandise will sell their merchandise, plain and simple.

The same concept can be applied to items being sold in the local newspaper classifieds.  A potential buyer will be more likely to follow up with a phone call if you take the time to include quality photos with your advertisement.

As an added bonus, you may attract buyers to your item that were not even looking for what you are selling in the first place.  They read your ad in the local newspaper and notice there are online photos available.  Out of curiosity, they go online to view the photos.  If the photos are good, you may be able to sell them something they didn't even know they wanted.  This happens all the time on the Internet, in Magazines, in Newspapers, etc.  The bottom line is photos sell.

The good news is that you do not need to be a professional photographer to take nice photos.  Simply follow the basic photo tips described above and you will be creating great photos of your items in no time!

This following photo gallery demonstrates basic photo taking and photo enhancing techniques. We have included before and after photos of items you would generally see listed in the classifieds. By making simple adjustments and enhancements, we were able to create photos that sell!

The before photo of the golf cart is too dark and not taken from the best angle.   The garbage can, fire hydrant and house in the background should not appear in the photo.  The after picture is significantly brighter and the color is sharper.  There are also no distracting objects to take away from the item for sale and the flowers add a nice touch.  Also, using the flash on outdoor shots can sometimes help to minimize shawdows.

The busy background in the first photo takes away from the look of the drill.  Also, the drill has not been positioned neatly before the pictures were taken.  In the after photo, the solid black background brings out the drill nicely and the photo is bright and crisp.   Remember to photograph all the pieces that are included with the item you are selling as shown above with the drill organized in it's case with the accessories.

The original photo is extremely dark and the printer for sale is cluttered on a desk with many other items.  The photo is taken from too far away.  Always get as close to the item as possible.  The after photo is bright and clear with no distracting items.

The before photo is washed out and much too light.  This may be due to improper exposure setting which means the flash was not properly used.  Try taking the photos with the flash off and see if this creates a better photo.  Depending on the outdoor lighting, the results may vary.  That is why it is important to take a fews photos, with and without flash, for each situation. The after photo shows the accurate color of the home and the brightness and contrast is perfect.

Many times taking the photos outside will give you the best results.  Natural light generally creates a better photo than inside lighting.   If feasible, consider bringing the item outside to take the photos.  The first photo is dark and does not hightlight the nice wood base or glass top well at all.  The after photos are clear and the features of the table are shown in much greater detail.

When photographing cars, you should take the photos from the front passenger side at such an angle that the front, side and part of the back of the car are viewable.  This will give the photo a professional and exciting look.  The before photo is flat and very one dimensional with a distracting background.  The after photo is taken at a much more visually appealing angle and the trees in the background accent the photo nicely.

The first photo is blurry.  Be sure to always hold the camera completely still until the shutter button is fully depressed.  This will help to elimate blurry photos.  The second photo is much clearer and brighter.  Also, by taking the photo at a closer range and using the macro mode, the details of this item are beautifully shown.

The before photo is cluttered and the photo was taken from too far away.  The after photo is brighter and the closeup shot accents the designs on the plate very well.

The Photo Enhancements above were provided courtesty of

Restore faded & aged heirloom photos. Smooth away wrinkles, straighten & whiten teeth. Colorize black and-whites. Change backgrounds, create a collage of 2 or more photos, remove an ex-spouse.  Turn an ordinary portrait into an oil painting by Renoir!
